Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is WebP smaller than JPG at the same quality?
WebP uses the VP8 intra-frame coder with better prediction and an arithmetic entropy coder. On photographs it usually lands 25 to 35 percent below JPEG at matching visual quality.
- What happens to animated WebP?
Only the first frame comes back. The browser decodes an animated WebP to a still image before it can be re-encoded.
- Is EXIF data kept?
No. The image is redrawn on a canvas before encoding, so camera metadata and GPS coordinates are dropped.
- Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool runs inside your browser tab. The file is read from disk locally and the result is written back locally, so there is nothing on our side to store or delete.
- Is there a size limit?
Images are capped at 100 megapixels, since the browser has to hold the full bitmap in memory. On file count: 8 operations per day without an account, 20 when signed in.
